Big Bang: A Provocative Poster Illustrating the Urgency of Climate Change

An Explosive Sociopolitical Statement by Miriam Trilety

While climate change is all over the news, it does not seem to be reaching people's minds. There is still a lot of power accumulated in the automotive and oil industry. The metaphoric hand grenade image plays with the urgency and high risk of facing extensive natural disasters. The central theme of the illustration is the global environmental crisis as a highly explosive sociopolitical matter.

The illustration "Big Bang" by Miriam Trilety showcases a hand grenade filled with cars, creating a visually striking and thought-provoking image. While the almost toy-like vehicles suggest a playful theme, the shape of the hand grenade conveys the tension and urgency of the subject matter. The intention behind this radical and hyperbolical illustration is to provoke a sense of awareness regarding the global issue of individual traffic and its detrimental impact on the environment.

Individual traffic causes a significant amount of air pollution and harm to the environment. By depicting a hand grenade filled with cars, Trilety aims to highlight the explosive consequences of our actions and the need for immediate action. The illustration serves as a powerful visual reminder of the urgent need to address climate change and reduce CO2 emissions.

The "Big Bang" poster was entirely created digitally using Procreate on iPad Pro. This digital production method allows for versatile applicability in different print areas. The project is suitable for outdoor use, as an indoor poster, publication in magazines, or even as a book cover. The goal of Trilety's work is to ensure the far-reaching visibility of the illustration in various media spaces.

Created in Vienna during the summer of 2018, the "Big Bang" poster reflects the designer's deep concern for the environment and the pressing issue of climate change. Trilety's research for this design involved exploring the European traffic light system, which uses the color yellow or orange as warning signals. Drawing inspiration from this, the yellow cars in the illustration symbolize the warning signs of the increasing threat of natural disasters caused by climate change.

One of the challenges faced during the creation of this design was finding the most impactful and uncomfortable way to visualize the critical and explosive state of the climate crisis. Through careful consideration and artistic skill, Trilety successfully captured the attention of viewers and conveyed the urgency of the global environmental crisis.

The "Big Bang" illustration by Miriam Trilety has garnered recognition and acclaim. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019 in the category of Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
